Gamble Alert Organizational Strategy 2023-2028
Dedicated to preventing and treating gambling harms in Nigeria through a whole-system approach.
Introduction
Gamble Alert is an independent charity dedicated to the prevention of and provision of treatment services for gambling harms in Nigeria. Guided by a Board of Trustees from the health, gaming, legal, and academic sectors, we have developed a new Organizational Strategy for 2023-2028. Our vision is a society where people are safe from gambling harms, achieved through a whole-system approach that collaborates with organizations, networks, and individuals with lived experience of gambling harms.
Gambling in Nigeria
Over 60 million Nigerians participate in gambling, often as a leisure activity. However, for some, it leads to significant health and well-being issues. The World Health Organization classifies gambling disorder as an addictive behavior, causing distress or impairment in personal, educational, or occupational life. Known as the 'hidden' addiction, its signs often go unnoticed until a crisis point. Gambling harms affect not only gamblers but also their families, friends, and society, reflecting social and health inequalities.

Gambling Treatment & Prevention
Reducing gambling harms requires a population health approach, considering the full range of health and well-being determinants, including civic planning and education. We aim to develop treatment and support services, improve access to help, and reduce barriers. This demands coordinated action among agencies, community members, and those with lived experience of gambling harms. While regulation is a governmental responsibility, empowering individuals with appropriate support is critical.
