“Little Little Bets, Big Consequences” -The Silent Epidemic of Underage Gambling
In some communities, there are teenagers who cannot tell you the last time they had a book in their hands, especially one they paid for, but can tell you the sure odds for tonight’s football match.
It starts small. A “quick game” on the way home from school, a “harmless” ₦100 bet, they call it fun. Parents dismiss it as “just boys being boys.” But pleasure becomes obsession, and soon enough, fun isn’t even the point. Lunch money becomes bet money. Homework becomes match analysis, and dreams? The bright and youthful kind, starts to fade behind the betting slips.
For when a child begins to gamble, it doesn’t just affect their wallets alone, but also their minds. The thrill of winning becomes addictive, rewiring their sense of what a reward is supposed to be. They stop planning for tomorrow because the next game always feels like a shortcut to getting rich, but shortcuts rarely lead to anywhere worth going.
The community feels it too, schools face increased number of absent kids, petty stealing grows, and families, ignorant at first, come to detect tiny lies and later big ones. What used to be laughter after a football game now sounds like arguments about missing money.
Underage gambling doesn’t wear a scary face and that’s because it hides behind laughter, mobile phones, and “innocent” predictions. But beneath the surface, it breeds anxiety, shame, and hopelessness.
Let’s be honest with ourselves, when our children gamble, we all lose.
So, before the next “bet app” becomes a trend among our children, let’s pause! Let’s talk! Let’s guide! Because if we don’t teach them that discipline, not luck, builds a future, then for sure the odds are already against them.
